Reiki Demystified

You may have heard of Reiki healing or a Reiki master before, but do you know what Reiki healing is, and more importantly, can Reiki help you? If you run the circuit of yoga, massage, natural health, meditation and spiritual practice that many of us who benefit from complementary and alternative medicine do, chances are at one point or another you have heard of reiki energy or reiki massage, or have read a reiki book or article. Maybe you have friends who have taken Reiki classes, or you have met a Reiki Master before. Even with all this popular information, many of us still wonder, what exactly is Reiki and do I need Reiki therapy?

What is Reiki?

Is Reiki massage? Meditation? Is Reiki a religion or spiritual practice? The answer to all these questions is, no not exactly, but it is a little bit like each of these things. One simple way to explain Reiki comes from the popular website reiki.org. “Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing”, according to one of the most popular reiki definitions by William Rand, world-renowned Reiki Master, and Reiki teacher. Ok so, we know that Reiki is a healing technique originating from Japan, but how does one explain Reiki energy?

How Does Reiki Work?

The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words “Rei” which means “god” and “ki” which means “energy”. Reiki literally means “god energy”. While this name may be more poetic than literal, the name gives a hint to how Reiki works. A Reiki master channels this special Reiki healing energy through their energy field, and can direct the Reiki energy into your energy field and body. This is similar to how acupuncture helps to balance the flow of energy through the body. Reiki has the added benefit of not needing Reiki healing hands to be placed directly on the recipient’s body. Reiki can be done at a distance. Distance healing Reiki is especially useful when someone can’t or doesn’t want to be touched. Distance Reiki uses special Reiki symbols to direct the energy in specific ways. These Reiki symbols, and how to use them are part of the special lineage that makes Reiki unique, passed directly from Reiki teacher to Reiki student, and makes Reiki a special technique that can’t just be learned from Reiki books.

What is a Reiki Master?

A Reiki Master has special training called “attunements” along with years of mentoring from their Reiki teacher. The attunements are a special process where the Reiki teacher helps the Reiki student open up their energy field and learn to channel this healing energy. Clinical studies comparing Reiki done by Reiki Masters who have received attunements compared to sham Reiki performed by actors provide statistically significant evidence that the Reiki Attunement is the factor that makes Reiki an effective treatment. Studies show that “Reiki” done by someone who has not received a Reiki attunement does not improve a patient’s health condition compared to no intervention at all.

Reiki Techniques and Classes

Reiki patients often ask me if I feel tired after doing a Reiki session. The answer is always a resounding “No! I feel energized”. If a Reiki Master is doing Reiki correctly, they aren’t using their own energy to help you. They are simply facilitating the flow of universal, healing energy through their body to you. The Reiki Master isn’t taking away or taking on your illness. Instead, the Reiki energy flows gently and smoothly to areas of illness or pain, rebalances the energy flow in that area, and fills any areas of negative energy with positive, healing energy, for both patient and practitioner.

How is Reiki Healing Done?

Traditionally, this Japanese Reiki technique is practiced by placing hands over energy centers of the fully-clothed body, but Reiki can also be practiced at a distance. Reiki is very flexible and easy to use. It can be done anywhere, with a patient sitting, standing or laying down. Frequently, a Reiki recipient lays down on a massage table and feels very relaxed from the Reiki treatment, which is why many people think of it as Reiki Massage. It is not a massage, although it has many of the same stress-reducing benefits. Reiki is a powerful healing modality. It can cure illness. It can lead to spiritual healing– healing the mind and healing the body. Reiki works on the elderly and on infants who are not aware of Reiki is being done on them. Reiki has been studied and continues to be researched with clear evidence showing success in treating a variety of conditions. What can Reiki be used to treat? Anything!

What Does Reiki Do?

Evidence shows Reiki reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, lowers blood pressure and heart rate, reduces pain, reduces recovery time, and is especially helpful in treating chronic health conditions that may be difficult to treat with medication. In clinical studies, Reiki is consistently proving to be more effective than a placebo and more effective than meditation, in reducing heart rate and blood pressure, activating the body’s relaxation response, reducing pain, anxiety and even depression. Reiki is used pre and post-surgery to reduce the amount of pain medication used during surgery and to reduce pain post-surgery. Reiki has even been studied in rats, using double-blind controlled trials, where reasonably strong evidence documented that Reiki sped healing and reduced measurable markers of stress in rodents who received Reiki.

If you suffer from anxiety, depression, cardiovascular disease or chronic pain, Reiki may be a great treatment choice for you, to enhance your current treatments.
